Martin Blaney completed a PhD on the relationship between German cinema and television at the University of Bath (UK), after which he transferred to Germany in 1988. Since 1990, he has been the correspondent for German-speaking countries and Eastern Europe at the British trade magazine Screen International and has contributed to publications such as German Films Quarterly, Kino: German Film, Blickpunkt: Film, and the Europa Cinemas Newsletter.
In addition to his journalistic work, Dr. Blaney has served as a jury member at numerous international film festivals, including those in Leipzig, Warsaw, Cluj, Pula, Krakow, Bitola, Pilsen, and Bratislava. He has also moderated various panels and pitching events across Europe, including at the Berlinale, MIP TV, Connecting Cottbus, Sofia Meetings, Visions du Réel, Directors Across Borders (Yerevan), the Transilvania International Film Festival, Open Doors (Locarno), the Europa Cinemas Network Conference, Baltic Event (Tallinn), When East Meets West (Trieste), and Odesa’s Film Industry Office, as well as for various MEDIA Programme initiatives.
